World Building: Meticulous Research or Flying by the Seat of your Pants?

Obviously this might depend a bit more on the genre one is writing, but how do you worldbuild? Do you plan everything down to the last blade of grass, or do you just let things unfold and leave more to the reader's imagination? Additionally, what tools and/or sites do you find most helpful for research? And once you have all that info, how much or how little do you use in your actual story?

No matter how long you've been in the writing business, there's always some new trick or tip you come across that makes you go... "Wow! Wish I'd known that!" "I have two Children's books. The first on is for toddlers and new readers. The pages are full of colorful pictures. The second book is for ages 8 through 12. It is informative and entertaining."
